He did not start his creative career as a director; he was interested in drawing from a young age and was a talented artist himself. Today, Timur Bekmambetov is considered one of the leading directors in Kazakhstan and Russia.

His new projects achieve popularity, are met with great interest among cinema enthusiasts, and spark serious discussion.

Timur came to Tashkent in 1980 and enrolled in the “Theater and Cinema Artist” department at the A.N. Ostrovsky Theater and Art Institute. After graduation, he worked at the “Uzbekfilm” film studio and the “Ilkhom” theater. In 1986-1987, Timur worked as a production designer on the film «Before the Big Road to War» (Pered bolshoy dorogoy na voynu). From 1989, he continued his career in Moscow by shooting commercials and music videos.

He first entered big cinema in 1994 as a screenwriter and assistant director with the war-genre film “Peshawar Waltz” (Peshavar vals). This debut was a great success. The «Night Watch» (Nochnoy Dozor) motion picture, released on the big screen in 2004, brought him real fame.

Russian film stars such as Konstantin Khabensky, Vladimir Menshov, Valery Zolotukhin, and Gosha Kutsenko starred in this motion picture. His next famous film is “Day Watch” (Dnevnoy Dozor), filmed in 2006.

He also gifted cinema lovers with a modern version of the 1975 Soviet-era classic “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!” (Taqdir hazili yoki qushday yengil bo'ling), titled “The Irony of Fate 2” (Taqdir hazili. Davomi), released in 2007. Timur Bekmambetov also directed the Hollywood blockbuster “Wanted” (Osobo opasen). This motion picture starred James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman, and it grossed over 330 million dollars at the box office.
